Kasiri nomads band together into tightly-knit traveling communities called kraits. Each krait has a name and history, and is ruled independently by an atya or chieftain, whose word is absolute law within the krait. Kasiri live by a code of conduct called Krait Law which governs every aspect of their lives. Atya means "stone", specifically a type of stone that is ground to make concrete, as it is the atya who fills in the blanks and gaps of Krait Law with his own decisions.

The largest krait in western Byzantur is the Longspur krait, led for 35 years by Liall, the white wolf of Omara, who is a legend among Kasiri. When Liall left the krait to return to his homeland, he turned leadership of the Longspur over to his enforcer, Peysho.
